These are a few pictures I took in Germany (mainly lots of castles.) First we will start off with a tour down the Rhein River. All of the first seven castles and one church were photographed either while flying down or on a cruise on the Rhein.
(Click on the thumbnail to see a larger version.)
This picture shows construction fairly typical of most of the castles in Germany, built on top of a cliff or hill.
This is another view of the same castle from a different angle.

Here is another castle along the river although obviously modernized.
This castle was a distance from the river sitting on a hill over- looking the valley going to the river.
This really isn't a very good picture but I am trying to show how castles were built on top of hills to make them very difficult to attack.
An old castle in not too good a state of repair but appearantly still lived in.

This castle is on a small island in the Rhine River. I was told it had been used for collecting tolls for ships traveling along the river.
A side view of the castle. From this view you can see the brick on the front of the castle that protects it from the flow of the river water.

The view from down river.

An old church along the river.

Now we get to my favorite castle in Germany. It is the Hohenzollern Castle southwest of Stuttgart. It is one of the most beautiful and well maintained castles in Germany. It sits high upon a hill overlooking the countryside and always made me wonder.... who in the world lives there? I won't expound on each picture, I'll just let you enjoy them.

This is the city of Rottenburg. It is also known as the "walled city" because it is completely sur- rounded by a wall to protect it from invaders.
Somewhere in that cloud of dust is a CH-47 Chinook helicopter landing.
In case you have never seen a Chinook up close or realized how large they really are here is a picture of me standing by one. This is what I flew while in Germany.
This is what the inside of the cockpit of a Chinook looks like. Very comfortable with excellent visibility.. great for sight seeing!
